Civitas Law is delighted to announce that former High Court Judge Sir Wyn Williams has joined chambers as a Mediator and Arbitrator.
The move is a significant one for the Welsh legal sector as Sir Wyn is the first former High Court Judge to offer Alternative Dispute Resolution expertise through a barristers’ chambers in Wales. Commercial, public and private organisations and lawyers alike will be able to appoint Sir Wyn for Mediation and Arbitration – a proven cost, time and reputation saving solution for many legal matters.
In 2013 Sir Wyn was appointed as the independent chairman of a committee constituted by the Welsh Rugby Union and the four regional clubs in Wales to oversee professional rugby in Wales. Subsequently Sir Wyn was asked to facilitate the negotiations and soon became treated as if he was mediating to help conclude a new agreement between the Union and the regional clubs. He performed that role voluntarily for six months during a very complex negotiation that culminated in a new six-year agreement. Under the high profile agreement, a Professional Rugby Board was constituted. Sir Wyn is an independent member of that Board.
Sir Wyn joins a strong team of widely respected arbitrators, adjudicators and mediators at Civitas Law . The team offers significant ADR experience across a wide range of practice areas, including disputes involving property, land, professional negligence, personal injury and renewable energy disputes.
Sir Wyn will also apply his distinguished judicial and mediation experience to the application of the MedArb. This cutting edge solution is applied to support cases that fail to resolve through Mediation alone. In these circumstances and where Mediators like Sir Wyn are able to gain the trust of both parties, the Mediator can swiftly move into the role of an Arbitrator and the parties can agree to be bound by their decision.
Mediators and Arbitrators at Civitas Law have already undertaken a number of successful multi-million pound MedArb resolutions, resulting in valuable savings and the best outcome for all parties.
Sir Wyn Williams said:
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a judge but I am now looking forward to the new challenges which appointment as an arbitrator or mediator will bring. I am privileged to join such a successful, progressive and enterprising set of Chambers in Wales.”
Nicholas David Jones, Barrister & Member of the Management Board at Civitas Law, added:
“This is a hugely important day for Mediation and Arbitration services in Wales and we are honoured to welcome Sir Wyn to Civitas Law. We’re delighted that he will work closely with our busy and ever-growing ADR team to offer our commercial, legal and public sector clients the benefit of his distinguished judicial experience and proven skills as a Mediator in complex cases.”
Sir Wyn Williams accepts appointments through Civitas Law as an arbitrator and mediator for both domestic and international disputes.
He will also become a door tenant at his former London chambers, 39 Essex Street.
