Public Law Project Wales Conference 2013

Graham Walters and Mona Bayoumi, both barristers at Civitas Law, have been invited to host specialist seminars at the Public Law Project’s annual Wales conference 2013 in April.

Each year, the event attracts a range of stakeholders in the private, public and third sectors regarding public law issues and remedies. This year's conference will assess developments in public law and the ways citizens can use the law to hold the state to account. It’s a conference for lawyers, advisers, advocates and campaigners, policy advisers and legal services in public bodies.

Graham, who is Head of the Public, Planning & Regulatory Group at Civitas Law, will lead a morning seminar on Development & Environmental Protection - planning for the future in Wales. This talk will focus on the specifically Welsh challenges for sustainable development and the particular framework and processes for development in Wales in key areas, e.g. energy projects.

Mona's specialist breakout seminar, also in the morning session, is entitled: Recent Developments in Immigration and Asylum Practice with Michael Mcgarvey, Asylum Justice. This seminar will be an update into likely changes to the asylum system, changes in the rules as per July 2012, and latest challenges practitioners face in relation to child applicants and recent case law.

The panel debate, Public law in practice in Wales, featuring Mona Bayoumi as a panel member, will take place in the afternoon. The panel will discuss the reality of day to day public law challenges from their own perspectives and in light of the research findings presented in the previous session. Among the questions that the panel will be asked to address, are:

  • What’s the reality of practicing judicial review and public law in Wales?
  • What issues face practitioners in the immediate future and
  • How might public law practice change in the wake of cuts to legal aid and advice services?

Delegates will also have the opportunity to raise questions.

Theo Huckle QC, Counsel General for Wales (and a member of Civitas Law) will host the opening address, providing an Update on Welsh constitutional issues.

Civitas Law is delighted to be a sponsor of the event, to be held on 11 April 2013 at the Cardiff Univeristy Glamorgan Building, Cardiff.
